Floating Homes - The "new" living on the water

Almost thirty years ago, people with individual lifestyles in particular were interested in houseboats. Due to diminishing living space in the cities and rising property prices - increasingly also in the countryside - living on the water has returned as a trend. It is no longer just boats that are inhabited, but the water has become the new building land.

As long as real estate has existed, properties with a waterfront location have probably been among the most sought-after. Whether on the rivers and canals of the cities. Water has something magical about it. It attracts people. It often offers a beautiful view, calms and relaxes. From ponds in the garden to swimming ponds and pools to houses on the lake, people seek proximity to water. Living on the water, which began with houseboats, has become a trend with "floating homes". A house on the water not only means living close to nature, for some it is also a prestige object.

Floating homes are not houseboats - although they do exist as such. But first and foremost, they are houses that float on water. Unlike houseboats, they do not have a propulsion engine. They can be found on the coasts and shores of lakes, seas or rivers and in inner cities. Even if they cannot be driven themselves, they can be moved. If owners of "floating homes" have to move, the home can theoretically be taken with them. So this property is not so immobile. However, a berth must be available at the new location.

As with real estate on land, there are also differences in size and equipment for "floating homes". The spectrum ranges from single-storey "houses" to luxury properties with 265 square metres and more, spread over several floors. Those who can afford it can have their individual design wishes realised.

A "floating home" is not only worthwhile as an owner-occupied home. Floating homes are also suitable for investors. They are also popular as holiday homes. So renting them out can also be worthwhile.

However, additional costs arise with a "floating home". As with a normal property, operating costs must be paid. In addition, there are mooring and maintenance costs. Because the houses are in the water, they have to be checked and maintained regularly. However, work is already underway on self-sufficient houses in the water. These are to be climate-friendly and self-sufficient in water, electricity and heat. "Floating homes" thus have the potential to somewhat alleviate the housing shortage in cities and be a worthwhile investment.
